QUEST: 1,000 Woodcuts Update
March 2001 -  90 completed
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

I guess I missed the February issue; poor February, it is such a small month that it gets neglected sometimes. No worries, we move on as always.
Exciting exhibit in New York this year. Doesn't really mean much in the big scheme of things, but it does seem to have a nice ring to it: I showed in New York. See what I mean? Not much of a sentence. Can't get too caught up on what has been done because there remains much to do.
It is now officially spring ("officially" on Tuesday the 20th) and the promise of a bright year is now upon us. I planned a busy season that starts this weekend. New works, larger works, smaller works, original blocks out the door. I hate collecting my own work, I make it to share it.

Upcoming exhibits listed here, do come by if you can just to say howdy.

New Stuff:

The Out of the Wood series starts to get interesting:

Some new techniques at the engraving block:

I tackled a larger print because the subject demanded it so:

And finally, a bunch of the "pocket-cuts" or smaller woodcuts designed to rid my studio of scrap wood, paper, and those annoying little globs of ink wrapped in aluminum foil:

Thoughts and Ramblings

Really too busy to think and ramble right about now, but I found that there is enormous satisfaction in working. Certainly much more so than in thinking about how much there is to do. I guess this is all related to the "plow on the ground" thing that I talked about last month.
But something is on my mind these days and that is the novelty of embarking on the road, four days to Reno for an art festival, doing several things I have never done before: pulling a trailer over a long stretch of road, setting up and tearing down by myself, participating in a huge festival indoors...
I had to do something to get over the fears and anxieties produced by overthinking all of those things. In thinking, I remember there was a time when nothing scared me, not hiking and backpacking by myself, not driving a '69 Ford Econoline van (ready to fall apart at any minute) across the country, not spending nights alone laying in a desert wash counting the stars on a still summer night. Everything was an adventure, then, and fear or apprehension, even, were not part of my vocabulary.  Tires went flat, I changed them.; gas ran out, I walked miles to get more; when I lost my way I simply waited for morning and the inevitable guiding Eastern light.
So I decided to be young and adventurous again. I'm going on an adventure this year. I will try new things and drive to new places and maybe even sleep under the stars again listening to the subtle sounds of peace. This year I will regain that state of mind where I can do anything and face everything and fear nothing.  I will feel young and strong again, and wish you all the same.
A new adventure begins.

Quote(s) of the Day

"Each is given a bag of tools,
A shapeless mass and a book of rules;
And each must make, ere life is flown,
A stumbling block or a stepping stone."
-R L Sharpe

Thanks for listening and health to all,
Maria
