Process: For this print I wanted a nebulous feeling, mystery, good and omenous together...you know. Anyhow, tough to do in woodcuts since the process is either on or off, no in between shading. So I took a lesson from the masters of old and printed a "grisaille" as a sort of base coat. I diluted black pigment so that it would print a bit patchy and printed the key block resulting in a cloudy grayish under the entire design. Then I overprinted transparent colors as usual. Kind of cool and, most surprising, the "look" I was looking for.

Image: In Cataluña (NorthEast region of Spain) the myth of the "water woman" lives as the Aloja (Aloges or Dones d'aigua).

These are feminine beings akin to the sirens of the sea that live in places with fresh water. It is said that the lakes where the dones d'aigua bathe can boil in anger if a stranger enters them, however the Aloja are good women and try to bring wealth and well-being to the areas they live in.

Aloja are nocturnal, have shimmering gold or red hair, and emerald or deep blue eyes. They enjoy viewing their reflections in lakes on full-moon nights.
